Employees, visitors and others can join in celebrating the Inauguration of Stony Brook's fourth president with a special reception in the Health Sciences Center with President Shirley Strum Kenny as guest of honor. 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.: Inaugural Concert featuring The Guild Trio, Lecture Hall 2, University Medical Center. Stony Brook Medical Center's Artists In Residence, The Guild Trio, perform works by two great women composers -- Clara Schumann and Rebecca Clarke -- in this special salute to President Shirley Strum Kenny on her inaugural. On "The Emerging Voice" program are Trio For Piano, Violin and Cello by Clarke and Trio Opus 17 by Schumann. Free.

11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Stony Brook Union, A Community Celebration in honor of President Shirley Strum Kenny. Music, demonstrations of juggling and Caribbean and Korean dance as well as a multitude of club and community displays are on tap in this festive midday event organized by Stony Brook students to honor President Kenny. More than 40 student organizations will have displays throughout the building including the Asian Student Alliance, the Caribbean Students Organization, Club India, Everyone Loves a Juggling Club, the Commuter Students Association and the UNITI Cultural Center. Area merchants will also have displays. A special presentation by the students to Dr. Kenny will highlight the event. Free. For information, contact Traci Thompson, 632-6828.
2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.: Faculty Symposium: "The Public Research University In the New Millennium," Stony Brook Union Auditorium. President Shirley Strum Kenny serves as commentator as panels of distinguished faculty use the occasion of her Inaugural to discuss public higher education in the 21st century. Sociology professor Norman Goodman will chair the symposium. Panels will run 45 minutes each. In the first panel discussion, moderated by psychologist K. Dan O'Leary, philosopher Sidney Gelber, chemistry professor Richard Porter and College of Engineering Dean Yacov Shamash will discuss "The Old Academy and the New: History and Projections." They will be followed by mechanical engineering professor John Kincaid, neurobiologist Mary Kritzer, French and Italian professor Lori Repetti and anatomical scientist Randall Susman discussing "Young Scholars In the New Academy." Microbiologist Charles Kim will moderate. The final panel, "Students In the New Academy," will be led by Medical School Associate Dean Aldustus Jordan and will include economist William Dawes, Technology and Society chair Thomas Liao, language professor Barbara Elling and microbiologist Eugene Katz. The session, free, is open to the public.

Thursday, April 279 a.m. - 3 p.m.: Pride Patrol. President Shirley Strum Kenny will lead a hearty band of volunteer painters, green thumb gardeners and trash collectors as they spread across the campus to spruce it up in time for the Inaugural. Students, faculty, staff and administrators pitch in for this annual event that wraps up with an ice cream social at 3:15 p.m. in the Indoor Sports Complex atrium. President Kenny will use the occasion to honor longtime Pride Patrollers!
8:30 p.m.: Spirit Of A New Beginning. Bring a blanket for a night of fireworks, entertainment and more at the athletic stadium. Winners of a campus talent show will demonstrate their star power in a special stage show that will also include a step show prepared in honor of President Kenny. Afterwards, look upward for a special Grucci fireworks display and then eye level for a fireworks ground show launching of Stony Brook's new star-studded logo.
10 p.m.: A Night Under The Stars. Huge video screens placed around the Fine Arts Plaza provide the setting for a Wild Video Dance Party co-hosted by the Student Activities Board and the Black Women's Weekend Committee. The plaza offers plenty of room to kick up your heels. Free refreshments, giveaways. (Rain Location: Pritchard Gym).
